69 Gallons of Applesauce

September 27, 2009

Happy 75th birthday to my Mom!

With a skeleton crew of five apple cutters, one cook and one/two grinders, we managed to make enough applesauce for the church’s annual Fall Festival.  The dinner serves about 2000 people.  Thank goodness Tillamook Ice Creamery sell used  buckets at 50 cents each or donates them to us.  We’d be at a loss without them!

Here are the remaining apples.  The bin was full in the morning.

And my husband ran a race in Portland with Alberto Salazar.  Here is a picture of them together.  Kevin has read most all of Alberto’s books and uses a lot of his training techniques.

Painting the garage door & trim

September 24, 2009

I have been working on the garage door this week.  A daycare parent brought me a can of XIM Peel Bond’s TRIM Magic and it worked great!

This is the garage door and front trim after I applied it.  This door may be as old as 1942, so I did the best I could in removing the old paint.

I painted everything except the top.

Yesterday, two friends and I went into Portland to shop for fabric at an online place.  The gals have a great variety of fabrics and can be found online at www.auntbeassewingbasket.com

This is what I chose for a pattern out of the book, “Material Obsession”.

How did that window get there?

In the effort to recycle everything… a pile of porcelain!

A pink room was thrown out the window above.  My friend says it was the ladies bathroom.

The high lift worker used the port-a-pot close to where we stood.  When asked if he is the envy of the other workers, he said yes that only a few get to use it.  He has triggers on the joysticks, cameras, heat & ac.  Pretty interesting work!   We were only over there for 10 – 15 minutes and this is how much he got down.

A Hamster Ball???

September 14, 2009

Here is what I thought was my last selvage quilt, but I’m acquiring more selvages, so who knows.  I’m not sure I like how long it is here or the items in front, but for now it will work…

cartwheelsThis weekend, I taught a gourmet backpack cooking class at Boy Scout’s Order of the Arrow Conclave.  In the afternoon there was a great assortment of things to do:  sumo wrestling, flute making, cotton candy to eat and a hamster ball, and, of course, a service project to name a few.  Here are some pictures.

My husband picked up my quilts from the drop off point for the State Fair and there was a surprise!  I got People’s Choice for Sun, Sept. 6th on my selvage quilt.  How nice!  Each day someone gets this ribbon!

A wet weekend backpack

September 8, 2009

We were to hike 25 miles on the northwestern part of the Timberline Trail.  The weather was so bad, we didn’t leave on Saturday, rather yesterday and did five miles in a lot of hail and rain.

McNeil Shelterafter shelter

Here is Mt. Hood back lit.  Even if we couldn’t see all of it due to clouds at the top, it is always magnificent.  This is from McNeil Shelter, which we hiked up to from Carin Basin where we spent last night.  We ended up with a 12 mile, wet backpack.  I’m happy!

I was able to bind this selvage quilt (to be named) in the car.

Hike along the Ocean Cliffs

September 1, 2009

My husband and I hiked a coastal trail Sunday that follows the Pacific Ocean from Ecola State Park.  These are the lands that Lewis and Clark crossed to get blubber from Indians.  Without trails, it seems amazing that they did this in the winter.  We also saw WWII bunkers.  What history we can see!
