Shrinking???

July 31, 2009

Last year, Kevin’s company gave out the water bottles on the left and said not to put them in the dishwasher.  This morning I found the one on the right on the stove with a note from Kevin saying to remember not to put them in the dishwasher.  I thought, “Cool, they gave out little ones, but I wonder why he didn’t get more like usual???”.    Clearly, I didn’t get enough sleep…  Finally, I realized that I had put it through the dishwasher and it shrunk!

Progress on the school demolition…

And here is my Fair quilt hanging last night.  They received 100 items more than usual in the Textile department.  I have to say that the quality was way improved from the past and that is so nice to see!  Having volunteered there for a few hours last night, I can give a tour of the really cool things to see!

Fair Quilt

July 28, 2009

Here is the main quilt I put into the Fair which opens this Thursday.  There were six others I entered.  My sister came up with the title after I told her the colors:  pink, cheddar and denim.  The quilt was a New Year’s mystery quilt by www.quiltville.com .

Vintage Quilt Top

July 25, 2009

So, I was ready to load this top and quilt it for the fair’s “old top/new quilting” category.  The backing is very cute and I picked out a great stripe for the binding.  Finally, I had a design figured out, but when I looked at the points again, it was obvious that not a single point even remotely matched.  After consulting with my friend, we decided I’d take it apart and start over.

I think this will take a while…  And I’ll have a significant amount of backing as extra.

Vintage Quilt in the Mail

July 24, 2009

A niece asked me to finish this top for her.  It’s mostly silks or something other than cotton.  It was on a muslin foundation and very wonky.  There is a little left to bind, but we spent too much time watching the school demolition that I ran out of time and it had to go to the Post Office with the other quilts heading to France.

For a godchild in France

July 22, 2009

My baby sister (#8 child) is going to France to be a godparent to a friend’s girl.  She had my mother hand piece a top AND a doll quilt to be mailed to me to quilt and bind.  The plain yellow she gave me to use was not all that cute, so a friend and I picked out this Flea Market Fancy by Free Spirit and a really cool stripe for the binding.  It’s much updated and very cute!

My brother is a fabulous wood guy.  He made this box for my son out of an old chestnut barn.  Finally, I had the mat cut and it’s all finished now.

Major demolition is happening a door away.  The school is coming down.  Last summer, a new school was built in the adjacent lot where the track and soccer field was located.  Now this school comes down and we get three playing fields.  It’s fun to watch all the scoops, diggers, etc.  We are told 90% of the old building will be recycled.

Here are some old bottles they must have found.

Potty

There were a few of these on our trek in Philmont.  Luckily, only once did I have to succumb and, since we were close to a river, the hike was a hand over fist one up the side of a cliff.  Rather nice spot and hidden from view…

Another one was about 50 feet from our dining area and about five men from other crews used it even though we were right there.  I was dying!!!

107 Miles Completed in New Mexico

July 13, 2009

We have returned from Philmont Scout Ranch, where we did itinerary 34 ~ the most difficult trek.  The weather was perfect for the most part and the bugs minimal.  In the 107 miles, we made the summits of Baldy, Tooth of Time and Mt. Phillips.  Undoubtedly, I would do it again!  Here my son and I are sitting on top of Mt. Baldy.
