Pinwheel Pizzazz

February 29, 2008

Here is a quilt I am working on from “Tried and True” by Sandy Bonsib.  The fabric was purchased with this summer’s county fair in mind.  The blocks went together fairly quick since they are 10″.  Now to get all the blocks put together.  Some of the outer edge blocks have been switched around.

The stack and whack I finished is in the mail to my mom.  Hopefully it will cheer her!

Secret Quilter Gift Once Again

February 26, 2008

My Secret Quilter from Machine Quilter Resource www.mqresource.com/ sent me a lovely package of goodies today.  Thank you Kay (http://myolivebranch.wordpress.com/)!  In case you can’t see the picture, there were two “high tea” cup pin cussions created from felted wool that I believe she made.  Whew!  That was a LOT of work!  I love orange and have them on display on the quilt rack my brother made for me in the dining room.  In addition, she included two packages of coffee from The Peddler in Sioux Falls, SD (my grandparents were married in Sioux Falls), “Quilter’s Vitamins” (will have to wait until Easter because I always give up sweets for Lent), and a signed book titled, “Sparkles Spatters and Other Private Matters” by Cynthia Lynn.  Thank you for all the wonderful gifts you sent during the past months.  I will miss your special treatment towards me!

Trillium Lake Snowshoe

February 24, 2008

We had another glorious day on Mt. Hood.  The sun was out, but there were clouds covering the top of the mountain.

Spring

February 22, 2008

Here is one of the first bulbs to come alive in our yard!  And every year, my running partners and I make note of the first time we hear birds on our 6am run.  Wednesday was the day this year.

Watch for more snowshoeing pictures from Mt. Hood in the next few days.  Tomorrow, we hike Trillium Lake.  My husband is picking up our rentals at REI right now and my poles that broke last week have been replaced.  I love REI!

Stack n Whack quilted

February 18, 2008
The near-vintage Stack n Whack is quilted ~~ now to figure out a binding.  I used Pam Clark’s ( www.homestitches.com) method and am happy with the overall plan, but can see that improvement is needed in keeping both sides of my quilting the same.

Twin Lakes on Mt. Hood

February 18, 2008

Yesterday, we snowshoed from Frog Lake Snow Park to Lower Twin Lake on Mt. Hood with 5 adults and 8 boys from our Scout Troop.  We set up our tents and carved out areas to cook.  While the boys were working on their 1,000 square foot cooking area (exaggerated highly), we adults hiked up to Upper Twin Lake.  It had a great view of the top of Mt. Hood and was not a very popular place given the few tracks and rough trail up to it.

The biggest lesson learned was not to keep wet hiking boots outside.  My son’s shoes were frozen solid in a way that a foot could not get in and the shoe laces were shooting out to the sides in weird spirals.  It took 16 minutes for him to even get a foot into one.

The weather was phenomenal and the outing outstanding!

Valentine Plate and Quilts

February 11, 2008

This quilt is called “Happy Hour” and designed by www.atkinsondesigns.com.  I made it for my children’s pre-school teacher’s son who was married the beginning of the month.  I used a pantograph titled, “Star Swirl” and it came out fantastic!

My next project is to quilt a stack and whack that my mother did before they were popular.  She probably did this back in the 80’s and will be surprised to get it in the mail when I finish.  Wish me luck!

Here is a plate that Momoyo, one of our many Japanese Exchange Students, made a few years back.  I just love putting it out at this time of year because we had the best time with her.

Pins

February 6, 2008

OK, maybe “playing pins” isn’t such a good idea for a five year old.  This little girl, whose parents are both principals, wants to be a “quilter” when she grows up.  She worked so hard on her quilt today and got pinned twice.  It doesn’t hurt.  The second time, I told her to hold on while I take a picture.

Olfa Cutter

February 4, 2008

I just remembered a funny Olfa cutter story.  My childcare girls (4 yr old) were sitting at the table pinning fabric when the 3 yr old comes up and keeps pestering us to let her “play pins”.  Here is where CSD could take my license…  I jokingly tell the story that I said, “Oh, Natalie, only two can play pins at a time, so here, you play Olfa cutter.”  She got to play pins and they all LOVE it!  The girls want to be quilters when they grow up.
