Three Bright Quilts

January 30, 2008

Three more bright quilts are finished.  First is one I was asked to make by a doctor in Virginia.  She wanted bunny rabbits fabrics in the quilt.  It is about 95″ square.

The next one is a kit that my mother purchased a few years back and I completed.  It is by John Flynn ( http://www.flynnquilt.com/ ).  This is a fairly small quilt.

And the third is called Twist n Turn by Red Rooster Fabrics.  It is in the 60″ square range.

Feathers: The White Buick

January 25, 2008

Last summer, our 1990 Buick Century had a major melt down, so our mechanic suggested we get rid of it and purchase another.  We gave it to a daycare parent and bought a 1996 blue Buick Century.

My daughter called one morning before Christmas and asked, “Mom, did you take my car?”  She is married and was to move into their new home in three days.  “No, dear, I didn’t, someone else must have.”  The daycare parent had been trying to sell the fixed-up white car, but hadn’t, so he gave it to them for the price he paid for parts only.  He had loved a quilt I gave his daughter, so I made him one of his own as thanks.  It is named, “Feathers” because that is what we called the car.  That’s another long story

Hearts Mended and Art Center

January 22, 2008

Last week at our quilt guild meeting, the guest speaker was ill, so we had a fill in.  The gal showed us how to make these mended hearts and we’ll be making some to exchange at our early February meeting.  I was so excited about them that I made up a bunch and still have enough blocks to exchange.  Here is the finished product.  The idea is certainly not mine, but they are lovely gifts.

This morning, my childcare children and I went to the local cultural art center.  The following mosaic is made with beer caps.

On another floor were fabric portraits of women artists by Kristina Staley.  Very cool!

Eagle Project

January 16, 2008

The first part of my son’s Boy Scout Eagle Project was this past weekend.  He is taking apart four picnic tables, refurbishing what he can, replacing the rest and reassembling later in the spring.  This part required removing the screws and carrying the planks over 1/4 mile up a muddy trail.  The planks will dry out before they work on them again

Here are the shoes and pants after the project.  The white shoes were changed right before the picture was taken.

Secret Quilter Birthday Gift

January 8, 2008

My Secret Quilter from Machine Quilter Resource http://www.mqresource.com/ sent me this lovely birthday gift.  Thank you whoever you are!

I have used most of the lovely gift she sent a while back.  The jelly roll strips were made into a quilt (far right) that was given to a dear friend at church this past Sunday.  And, I used the charm pack to make a table runner for my neighbor.

I love fabric and being able to use it.  Someone wrote somewhere about not saving your favorite fabrics, rather, use them.  This is good advice for me.

Painting as Christmas Gift

January 7, 2008

Here is a painting I asked Jim Whaley http://www.visitthurstoncounty.com/ccity.htm#art  to paint for my husband as a Christmas gift.  We were married in Yosemite at this church.  My husband lived in the park as a child since his dad was a Park Ranger there.

The first picture is the actual painting that I had framed and the second is the postcard (published by IMPACT and photographed by Dana Morgenson) that I gave Mr. Whaley so he knew what I wanted.

My husband was thrilled with this gift.

Short Winter Vacation

January 4, 2008

I am back from nearly a week in the Washington DC area.  Once again, the Washington Monument eluded me.  It was closed due to high winds on Wednesday; however, the kids played in the exhaust and had fun.  We also went to a park and played on The Awakening http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Awakening_(Johnson_sculpture)

Prior to this, my father and son did some rock climbing, we all hiked and had a huge family gathering with 36 of us.  My mother and I discussed a lot of quilts and I have many new projects for 2008.  I am thankful for my wonderful family.

Happy New Year!
